Koprinka Dam, Bulgaria

Koprinka reservoir is one of the many beautiful man made reservoirs in Bulgaria. Its bed is located in the Rose Valley, 7 km west of the town Kazanlak. Georgy Dimitrov was the old name of the dam located 390 meters above the sea level, its length is 20 km. or even more. The reservoir is surrounded by many small arms and large bays that attract the local tourists and foreigners.

The idea of creating this kind of water facility along the river Tundja occurs at the beginning of the last century 1923. It was hart to accomplish this project, but after the end of World War II, the Ministry of construction give their support and in 1955 year this project was finished.

Язовир Копринка

The reservoir wall is used as a way to connect the northern and southern shores of the dam. The length of the wall is 610 meters and the height is 44 meters. The view that opens along the entire wall during sunrise and sunset is inspiration for photographers and local artists. Tourists traditionally greet sunsets on the wall, enjoying the amazing colors of the sky and water.

The calm waters of dam Koprinka offer wonderful opportunities for camping, vacations, water sports, picnics, long walks and sunbathing. For fishermen the reservoir offers a wide variety of fish species. This is one of the best places to catch white fish during the cold season.

Язовир Г. Димитров

Еxcept the white fish, there may be caught carp, chub, bream, bleak, maple, roach, barbel and of course catfish. People from Kazanlak and all fishermen in the district have heard of mythological stories about catfish monsters living in the depth of the reservoir. A lot of fishermen proved with their catch that the large catfish really exist.

Mega project “Sevtopolis”

Koprinka dam actually has a very interesting history associated with the popular project Sevtopolis. During 1948 year when the dam was constructed archeologists found ancient Thracian city lying on the bottom. It looks this is the only one fully explored underwater architectural complex in Bulgaria. The ancient Thracian city has a heritage filled with details about the life of the Thracians.

Севтополис

During archaeological excavations established that the town was also a big well fortified village surrounded on three sides by the Tonzus river (today called Tundja ). The king of this Thracian settlement was Sevt III. His castle represents large two floor building with magnificent decorations typical for the homes of Kings.

According to archaeologists the city was in economic boom, as evidenced by the board sweep of the building and the principles of urban planning. It is said that Sevt III was the first of the Thracian kings started the coinage. During the exploration of the city are found nearly 2000 coins, as half of them belongs to Sevt III.

Tracian Sevtopolis

This is a small part of the great story of the submerged city of Sevtopolis. Mega project aims at exposing ancient Odrysian capital by building a new dam wall inside the water. This wall will surround the ancient Thracian city. This is a project created by Zheko Tilev, and winning prize by UNESCO and European prize for architecture. Development aims as many tourist as its possible to reach the ancient city by boats. They would reach the restored city Svetopolis with panoramic elevators.

The tourist will have the opportunity to touch the spirit of passed era, they would enjoy the architectural genius of the Thracian king Sevt III. For now this project has the approval of the Ministry of Culture. If this project get realized it will attract about 500 000 tourist from the whole world. This can become driving force not only for the Kazanlak region, but also for Bulgaria.

10-year bull market coming to an end

As I wrote in my post 12 months ago, I am waiting for the end of the rising stock market.

It is true that the American stock markets recovered meanwhile and even made a new Alltime high, but time is running out.

As you can see in the Fibonacci chart below, the US market (here SPX500) has recovered from its 2018 end-year losses by 61.8 percent:

Things seem to be quite comparable with January, 2018 when the Dow Jones Industrial index rose for several days without any correction. These days, the stock index rose 1000 points within seven working days (28.1.2019 until 5.2.2019):

This is why I think that it is a good idea to sell stocks now and better buy a short instrument on the Dow Jones Industrial or the S&P500 index.

With the US opening today, the index continued moving southwards:

Here are two more articles with some background information:

Preparing for the end of the bull market

By some measures – and there is controversy about it – we are now in the longest bull market in the history of the S&P 500. For many people, that raises alarms. We all remember the devastating impact of the crash of 2008 – it’s been imprinted on our psyches. Brent Joyce doesn’t share those views. He is the chief investment strategist at GLC Asset Management Group, which oversees over $50 billion on behalf of its clients. He believes that while the S&P bull is getting long in the tooth, it has another year to 18 months to run. And when it ends, it will be with a “garden variety recession,” not the cataclysmic economic seizure we experience in 2008, which almost let to the collapse of the world financial system.

“Some people think a bear market automatically results in a loss of 40% or 50% of their money,” he says. “It’s not that high.” By his calculations, the average bear market loss for the S&P 500 is 33%. The average bull gain is 172%.

The current S&P bull started on March 10, 2009, when the index, which had been in decline for months, rallied by 6%, en route to a 10.7% weekly gain. It has not dropped by 20% in closing trading since then. (A 20% decline from the high is the number economists generally regard as signalling a bear market.)

There were a few close calls, notably in 2011 and again in 2015-16. But both times the S&P decline stopped just short of the 20% figure. You can find a descriptive time line of the bull at: https://www.glc-amgroup.com/news-insights/market-reviews/s-p-500-makes-history-recording-longest-bull-market-run-ever.html

Although this is arguably the longest bull in the history of the S&P 500, it is not the most profitable one. That honour goes to the 1990s tech boom, which saw the index soar by 417% before the bust hit. This time around, the gain to date is only 323%.

In terms of compound annual growth, the current bull only ranks eighth out of twelve since 1942. The number-one spot is held by the bull market of 1982-87, which saw the S&P 500 rise by an average of 26.6% per year.

It’s worth noting that the Toronto Stock Exchange does not share in this record run. It has twice dropped more than 20% over the same period.

There are signs of some erosion around the edges of the S&P bull, Mr. Joyce says. Share prices are high (although not as high as during the tech boom of the 1990s), and rising interest rates, increasing wage demands, and higher input costs from tariffs and commodity prices will eventually eat into corporate profits. Uncertainty over trade policies may also have a negative effect on investment decisions, which would hamper growth.

However, none of this will happen overnight. “Net earnings drive markets higher, and we believe we have several strong quarters still to come,” he says.

That said, Mr. Joyce cautions it is unrealistic to believe that there won’t be another bear market. “It could come along any time,” he says. While he doesn’t think it is imminent, any number of unforeseen factors could trigger it.

For that reason, his company’s investment strategy is shifting towards neutral in its balance between equities and fixed income. He urges investors to re-evaluate their own portfolios in this context and decide whether they are in a comfortable position to deal with a bear market when it returns.

Where to invest

Where should you invest? On the fixed-income side, he recommends high-quality bonds over high-yield bonds for safety reasons. High-yield bonds (often called junk bonds) will be vulnerable in a recession. Bonds with a high credit rating will provide portfolio stability in a stock market downturn.

On the equities side, he advises overweighting Canadian stocks, based on reasonable valuations and good earnings. He is also still positive on U.S. stocks, despite high prices, due to the continued strong earnings outlook. But underweight emerging markets, he suggests. They are too volatile in the current context.

“Don’t get hung up on this longest bull market milestone. It’s history,” he concludes. “But if it prompts people to reassess their portfolios and their objectives, that’s good.”

We’re in the Longest Bull Market in History — What Should You Do Now?

While no one can predict when the bull market will end, there are some protective steps you can take.

Aug 29, 2018 at 6:13AM
The post–financial crisis bull market recently became the longest in history, and the S&P 500 continues to reach new all-time highs. In addition, several key metrics indicate that stocks are historically expensive right now. While it’s never a smart idea to stop investing in stocks altogether just because they seem expensive, there are steps you can take to prepare for an eventual downturn. Here’s an overview of how this bull market stacks up to others, why the market looks a bit expensive, and what you can do to set yourself up for success, no matter what comes next.

Stock chart showing an upward trend.

Is this really the longest bull market in history?

By most experts’ definitions, the current bull market is indeed the longest in U.S. history. However, there are two big caveats to that statement. First, as you can see in this chart of the five longest bull markets ever, while this one is the longest, it isn’t the one with the largest upside move. Not yet, anyway.

All-Time Rank Bull Market Start Bull Market End Total S&P 500 Gain
5 August 1982 August 1987 229%
4 October 1974 November 1980 126%
3 June 1949 August 1956 267%
2 October 1990 March 2000 418%
1 March 2009 Present 324% (so far)

Data Source: www.visualcapitalist.com. Current bull market gain updated as of 8/28/2018.

Additionally, some reputable sources consider the bull market that began in the 1990s to be just one part of the longest bull market in history. For example, according to FINRA’s list of the five top bull markets, the longest bull market spanned more than 12 years, from October 1987 through March 2000. Though that period included the savings and loan crisis in the late 1980s, there’s a solid case to be made that that was a correction in a longer-term bull market.

Technical definitions aside, there’s no denying that the current bull market has been an impressive run for stocks, with the S&P 500 more than quadrupling since the financial crisis lows.

Is the stock market too expensive?

Generally speaking, the answer is yes.

For starters, the average P/E multiple of the S&P 500 is more than 25. This is significantly higher than the long-term average of about 15.7. However, earnings growth has accelerated recently due to tax reform, so it’s possible that this metric is deceptively high.

In addition, the so-called Buffett indicator has never been higher. Warren Buffett has described the ratio of total stock market capitalization to GDP as the “best single metric of where valuations stand at any given moment.” Generally speaking, levels over 100% are considered to be expensive.

Well, the ratio is currently at more than 148%. Not only is this well beyond what Buffett and many other experts consider to be expensive, it’s at an all-time high. In fact, the indicator peaked at about 145% at the height of the dot-com bubble.

When will it end?

Here’s the problem. Stocks are historically expensive right now, and it’s difficult to make a solid argument to the contrary. However, timing the market is impossible to do.

In other words, just because we’re now in the longest bull market in history doesn’t mean that stocks can’t continue to go up for several more years. Under the right political and economic circumstances, it’s possible that there’s tremendous upside from here.

What should you do?

To be clear, it’s not wise to stop investing in stocks simply because the market looks expensive. However, there are a few smart moves you can make to protect yourself in the event of a correction while also setting yourself up to take advantage if prices continue to climb higher. For example, you could:

  • Start buying some defensive stocks — utilities, REITs, consumer staples, and Dividend Aristocrats are some good places to look. These tend to fare better than most other stocks during tough times.
  • Average into new positions. In other words, instead of investing, say, $5,000 in a stock you have your eye on, it could be smart to invest $1,000 per month. This way, if the market continues to rise, you’ll likely enjoy some upside, but if the stock falls, you’ll be able to buy some of your shares cheaper.
  • Accumulate some cash to take advantage of opportunities that arise if the market corrects. To be clear, it’s still a smart idea to leave most of your money invested. As a personal example, I have roughly 10% of my portfolio in cash right now, ready to pounce if stocks drop — but 90% of my money is still invested and ready to capture any further upside. As Buffett says, “When it rains gold, put out the bucket, not the thimble.” Having a modest amount of cash gives you a bucket to put out.

The bottom line is that while stocks look a little expensive right now, there’s no reason to think that a downturn is imminent. The bull market won’t last forever, but it could certainly last for a while longer. Having said that, it’s not a bad idea to play a little defense with your investment strategy.

Website www.uvnc.com

Features

UltraVNC allows the use of a remote computer as if the user were in front of it. This is achieved by sending mouse movements and key-presses to the remote computer, and replicating the remote computer’s display (subject to differences in resolution) locally in real time. UltraVNC bears a strong resemblance to RealVNC Free Edition. However, in addition to remote control, it adds various features, such as an encryption plugin to secure the client/server connection. It also supports file transfers, chat functionality and various authentication methods. The two computers must be able to communicate across a network, such as a local subnet, internal network, or the Internet. The software is free and distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

It can use an optional mirror driver, to be installed on the remotely controlled computer, for fast and efficient notification of screen changes with very low CPU load.[2]

History

UltraVNC is developed in the C, C++, and Java programming languages.

The 1.0.6.4 release added support for working as a Windows service under User Account Control (UAC).

Reverse control

UltraVNC is notable as the base for free no-install remote help desk options including UltraVNC Single Click (“SC”) and PCHelpWare. These operate by generating pre-configured executables that can be downloaded and run on systems needing support; these applications then connect back to server software running on the system providing support.

RealVNC remote access software

RealVNC is a company that provides remote access software. The software consists of a server (VNC Server) and client (VNC Viewer) application for the Virtual Network Computing (VNC) protocol to control another computer’s screen remotely.

Andy Harter (CEO of RealVNC Limited) and other members of the original VNC team at AT&T founded RealVNC Limited in 2002.

Platforms, editions, versions

For a desktop-to-desktop connection RealVNC runs on Windows, on Mac OS X, and on many Unix-like operating systems. A list of supported platforms can be found on the website. [1] A RealVNC client also runs on the Java platform and on the Apple iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and Google Android devices. A Windows-only client, VNC Viewer Plus is available, designed to interface to the embedded server on Intel AMT chipsets found on Intel vPro motherboards.

For remote access to view one computer desktop on another, RealVNC requires one of three subscriptions:

  1. Home – free registration and activation[not in citation given] required
  2. Professional – commercial version geared towards home or small-business users, with authentication and encryption, remote printing, chat and file transfer
  3. Enterprise – commercial version geared towards enterprises, with enhanced authentication and encryption, remote printing, chat, file transfer, and command-line deployment

As of release 4.3 (released August 2007) separate versions of both the Personal and Enterprise editions exist for 32-bit and 64-bit systems. Release 4.6 included features such as HTTP proxy support, chat, an address book, remote printing, unicode support, and connection notification.

Users must activate each of the server versions (“Home”, “Professional”, “Enterprise”).[2]

With the release of VNC 5.0 late December 2013, RealVNC software editions used a single binary which superseded VNC Enterprise Edition and VNC Personal Edition.[3]

In November 2016, RealVNC released the updated version of their software, now called VNC Connect (version 6.0). The new version introduces a cloud connection option using a subscription-based pricing model. Users can choose between three subscription levels; Home (free for non-commercial use), Professional and Enterprise. Home and Professional subscriptions are cloud connections only. The Enterprise subscription supports hybrid connections that include the traditional direct (peer to peer) connections and/or cloud connections.[4]

Client

RealVNC clients using vncviewer can run in full-screen mode; they use the F8 function-key as the default key for bringing up an options menu (which includes the option to, among other things, switch off full screen mode or to forward a Control-Alt-Delete key-sequence).

Server

The server component of RealVNC allows a computer to be remotely controlled by another computer.

Connectivity

RealVNC uses the RFB protocol. It defaults to TCP port 5900. When making a connection over the Internet, the user must open this port in the local firewall as well as configure port forwarding to forward TCP Port 5900 (or the customized port respectively) to the local machine address if behind a NAT Router.

As an alternative, one can tunnel VNC through SSH, avoiding the opening of additional ports and automatically traversing the NAT router. SSH also provides encryption of the connection between the VNC server and viewer.

After proposing remote access interface for Weston in October 2013,[5] RealVNC published a Wayland developer preview in July 2014.[6][7]

Limitations

The VNC protocol is pixel based. Although this leads to great flexibility (e.g., any type of desktop can be displayed), it is often less efficient than solutions that have a better understanding of the underlying graphic layout, like X11. Those protocols send graphic primitives or high-level commands in a simpler form (e.g., open window), whereas RFB just sends the raw pixel data.

Virtual Network Computing (VNC)

In computing, Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a graphical desktop sharing system that uses the Remote Frame Buffer protocol (RFB) to remotely control another computer. It transmits the keyboard and mouse events from one computer to another, relaying the graphical screen updates back in the other direction, over a network.[1]

VNC is platform-independent – there are clients and servers for many GUI-based operating systems and for Java. Multiple clients may connect to a VNC server at the same time. Popular uses for this technology include remote technical support and accessing files on one’s work computer from one’s home computer, or vice versa.

VNC was originally developed at the Olivetti & Oracle Research Lab in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The original VNC source code and many modern derivatives are open source under the GNU General Public License.

Virtual Network Computing logo

There are a number of variants of VNC[2] which offer their own particular functionality; e.g., some optimised for Microsoft Windows, or offering file transfer (not part of VNC proper), etc. Many are compatible (without their added features) with VNC proper in the sense that a viewer of one flavour can connect with a server of another; others are based on VNC code but not compatible with standard VNC.

VNC and RFB are registered trademarks of RealVNC Ltd. in the U.S. and in other countries.

VNC in KDE 3.1

History

The Olivetti & Oracle Research Lab (ORL)[3] at Cambridge in the UK developed VNC at a time when Olivetti and Oracle Corporation owned the lab. In 1999, AT&T acquired the lab, and in 2002 closed down the lab’s research efforts.

Developers who worked on VNC while still at the AT&T Research Lab include:[4]

Following the closure of ORL in 2002, several members of the development team (including Richardson, Harter, Weatherall and Hopper) formed RealVNC in order to continue working on open-source and commercial VNC software under that name.

The original GPLed source code has fed into several other versions of VNC. Such forking has not led to compatibility problems because the RFB protocol is designed to be extensible. VNC clients and servers negotiate their capabilities with handshaking in order to use the most appropriate options supported at both ends.

As of 2013, RealVNC Ltd claims the term “VNC” as a registered trademark in the United States and in other countries.[5]

Etymology

The name Virtual Network Computer/Computing (VNC) originated with ORL’s work on a thin client called the Videotile, which also used the RFB protocol. The Videotile had an LCD display with pen input and a fast ATM connection to the network. At the time, network computer was commonly used as a synonym for a thin client; VNC is essentially a software-only (i.e. virtual) network computer.[citation needed]

Operation

  • The VNC server is the program on the machine that shares some screen (and may not be related to a physical display – the server can be “headless”), and allows the client to share control of it.
  • The VNC client (or viewer) is the program that represents the screen data originating from the server, receives updates from it, and presumably controls it by informing the server of collected local input.
  • The VNC protocol (RFB protocol) is very simple, based on transmitting one graphic primitive from server to client (“Put a rectangle of pixel data at the specified X,Y position”) and event messages from client to server.

In the normal method of operation a viewer connects to a port on the server (default port: 5900). Alternatively (depending on the implementation) a browser can connect to the server (default port: 5800). And a server can connect to a viewer in “listening mode” on port 5500. One advantage of listening mode is that the server site does not have to configure its firewall to allow access on port 5900 (or 5800); the duty is on the viewer, which is useful if the server site has no computer expertise and the viewer user is more knowledgeable.

The server sends small rectangles of the framebuffer to the client. In its simplest form, the VNC protocol can use a lot of bandwidth, so various methods have been devised to reduce the communication overhead. For example, there are various encodings (methods to determine the most efficient way to transfer these rectangles). The VNC protocol allows the client and server to negotiate which encoding they will use. The simplest encoding, supported by all clients and servers, is raw encoding, which sends pixel data in left-to-right scanline order, and after the original full screen has been transmitted, transfers only rectangles that change. This encoding works very well if only a small portion of the screen changes from one frame to the next (as when a mouse pointer moves across a desktop, or when text is written at the cursor), but bandwidth demands get very high if a lot of pixels change at the same time (such as when scrolling a window or viewing full-screen video).

VNC by default uses TCP port 5900+N,[6][7] where N is the display number (usually :0 for a physical display). Several implementations also start a basic HTTP server on port 5800+N to provide a VNC viewer as a Java applet, allowing easy connection through any Java-enabled web-browser. Different port assignments can be used as long as both client and server are configured accordingly. A HTML5 VNC client implementation for modern browsers (no plugins required) exists too.[8]

Although possible even on low bandwidth, using VNC over the Internet is facilitated if the user has a broadband connection at both ends. However, it may require advanced NAT, firewall and router configuration such as port forwarding in order for the connection to go through. Users may establish communication through Virtual Private Network (VPN) technologies, including instant VPN applications (such as LogMeIn Hamachi) to ease usage over the Internet, or as a LAN connection if VPN is used as a proxy, or through a VNC repeater (useful in presence of a NAT).[9] [10]

Xvnc is the Unix VNC server, which is based on a standard X server. To applications, Xvnc appears as an X “server” (i.e., it displays client windows), and to remote VNC users it is a VNC server. Applications can display themselves on Xvnc as if it were a normal X display, but they will appear on any connected VNC viewers rather than on a physical screen.[11] Alternatively a machine (which may be a workstation or a network server) with screen, keyboard, and mouse can be set up to boot and run the VNC server as a service or daemon, then the screen, keyboard, and mouse can be removed and the machine stored in an out-of-the way location.

In addition, the display that is served by VNC is not necessarily the same display seen by a user on the server. On Unix/Linux computers that support multiple simultaneous X11 sessions, VNC may be set to serve a particular existing X11 session, or to start one of its own. It is also possible to run multiple VNC sessions from the same computer. On Microsoft Windows the VNC session served is always the current user session.[citation needed]

Users commonly deploy VNC as a cross-platform remote desktop system. For example, Apple Remote Desktop for Mac OS X (and more recently, “Back to My Mac” in ‘Leopard’ – Mac OS X 10.5) interoperates with VNC and will connect to a Unix user’s current desktop if it is served with x11vnc, or to a separate X11 session if one is served with TightVNC. From Unix, TightVNC will connect to a Mac OS X session served by Apple Remote Desktop if the VNC option is enabled, or to a VNC server running on Microsoft Windows.[12]

In July 2014 RealVNC published a Wayland developer preview.[13][14]

Security

By default, RFB is not a secure protocol. While passwords are not sent in plain-text (as in telnet), cracking could prove successful if both the encryption key and encoded password are sniffed from a network. For this reason it is recommended that a password of at least 8 characters be used. On the other hand, there is also an 8-character limit on some versions of VNC; if a password is sent exceeding 8 characters, the excess characters are removed and the truncated string is compared to the password.

UltraVNC supports the use of an open-source encryption plugin which encrypts the entire VNC session including password authentication and data transfer. It also allows authentication to be performed based on NTLM and Active Directory user accounts. However, use of such encryption plugins make it incompatible with other VNC programs. RealVNC offers high-strength AES encryption as part of its commercial package, along with integration with Active Directory. Workspot released AES encryption patches for VNC. According to TightVNC,[15] TightVNC is not secure as picture data is transmitted without encryption. To circumvent this, it should be tunneled through a SSH connection (see below).

VNC may be tunnelled over an SSH or VPN connection which would add an extra security layer with stronger encryption. SSH clients are available for most platforms; SSH tunnels can be created from UNIX clients, Microsoft Windows clients, Macintosh clients (including Mac OS X and System 7 and up) – and many others. There are also freeware applications that create instant VPN tunnels between computers.

An additional security concern for the use of VNC is to check whether the version used requires authorization from the remote computer owner before someone takes control of their device. This will avoid the situation where the owner of the computer accessed realizes there is someone in control of their device without previous notice.

Svishtov (Bulgarian: Свищов) is a town in northern Bulgaria, located in Veliko Tarnovo Province on the right bank of the Danube river opposite the Romanian town of Zimnicea. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Svishtov Municipality. With a population of 35,923 inhabitants, as of December 2009,[1][2][3] the town is the second-largest in the province after the city of Veliko Tarnovo and before Gorna Oryahovitsa.

Name

The origins of the name Svishtov can be found in its old Bulgarian variation Sveshtniy (Свѣщний), deriving from the word svesht or svyasht (свѣщ), meaning “candle”. This was due to the existence of a lighthouse in the city. The previous name Sistova was first mentioned in the peace treaty that ended the Austro-Turkish War in 1791, when Bulgaria was still under Ottoman rule. This name was chosen instead of the Turkish word Zigit. During the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria the town was also known as Ziștovi and in Romanian as Șiștova.

Geography

Svishtov is situated in northern central Bulgaria on the right bank of the Danube river in its southernmost point, across from Zimnicea, Romania. The town lies 237 kilometres (147 miles) north-east of the capital Sofia, and 251 kilometres (156 miles) west of the major Black Sea port of Varna. Other important cities in the region are Pleven 80 kilometres (50 miles) away, and Ruse 90 kilometres (56 miles) away.

The port of Svishtov is the southernmost harbour on the Danube. It is served around the clock by the Svishtov-Zimnich ferry — a regular operation Ro-ro ferryboat across the Danube between Svishtov and Zimnicea. The ferry shortens the road path to and from Turkey to Central and Western Europe by 140 kilometres (87 miles) when compared to the traditional route over the Danube Bridge at Ruse-Giurgiu and allows a time gain of nearly four hours thus avoiding the traffic in and around the city of Bucharest.

History

The Aleko Konstantinov’s house museum

Svishtov is identified with the Roman colony Novae mentioned by Ptolemy.[5] The emperor Vespasian sent the legion I Italica there 70 AD and Novae served as the legion’s base for centuries. Novae served as a base of operations for Roman campaigns against Barbarian tribes including Trajan’s Dacian Wars, and the last time during Maurice’s Balkan campaigns. The legion was also responsible for bridge construction over the Danube.

The colony of Novae was the residence of St. Lupus of Novae.

For a short time the place was the main city for the Ostrogoths of Theodoric the Great. Theodoric occupied Singidunum in 471 and, after plundering Macedonia and Greece, settled in Novae (the modern Svishtov), on the lower Danube, in 483, where he remained till he transferred the sphere of his activities to Italy ten years later.

It was destroyed some time after 613, as shown by coin founds minted up to this date.

The Treaty of Sistova ended the last Austro-Turkish war (1787–91). Brokered by Great Britain, Prussia and the Netherlands,[1] it was signed in Sistova (modern Svishtov) in present-day Bulgaria on 4 August 1791.[2] The treaty was written in French and Turkish.[1]

During one of the Russo-Turkish Wars in 19th century, Svishtov has been burnt down to the ground during the retreat of the Russian Army. The city fortress has been destroyed and the population has been forced to leave the city and move across the river Danube. It was done by the order of General Nikolay Kamenskij and executed by General Guillaume Emmanuel Guignard de Saint-Priest. The event has taken place on September 27, 1810 (Sept 14, according to Julian Calendar). Account in regards of that event has been given by Dr.Dimitar Pavlovich in his book “The life of Dimitar Hadzhivasilev”, published in 1906 and in the biography book of General Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov. A year later the restoration of the city has started with the efforts by few returned natives from Svishtov. The funding of the first street projects has been secured by donated profit, made from vineyard production. In few years the city was completely rebuilt and back to life as one of the main ports on Danube river. In 1829 half of the city was burned again during the next war between Russia and Ottoman Empire, by the order of General Dibich. Soon everything was restored. Svishtov became the home education and newly founded schools, sponsored by generous donors, citizens of Svishtov who built the first vocational school of trade and the University of Svishtov, Academy of Economics, first secular education school and etc.

Svishtov is known as the first town to be liberated during the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78, since the largest part of the Imperial Russian Army forced the Danube nearby. In January 1878 a correspondent of The Times of London noted that, because of the war, “Sistova does not present its former animated appearance, although there is much more movement here than I expected, . . . with roast turkeys, chickens, and all other delicacies of the season on the bill of fare” of the “numerous restaurants in the town.”[6]

On 4 March 1977, Svishtov suffered major structural damage in the Vrancea earthquake, including the collapse of three apartment blocks in which over 100 people were killed.

Svishtov Cove in Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica is named for the town of Svishtov.

Silistra (Bulgarian: Силистра; Romanian: Dârstor) is a port city in northeastern Bulgaria. The city lies on the southern bank of the lower Danube river, and is also the part of the Romanian border where it stops following the Danube. Silistra is the administrative center of the Silistra Province and one of the important cities of the historical region of Southern Dobrudzha.

Silistra is a major cultural, industrial, transportation, and educational center of northeastern Bulgaria. There are many historical landmarks including a richly-decorated Late Roman tomb, remains of the Medieval fortress, an Ottoman fort, and an art gallery.

Etymology

The name Silistra is possibly derived from the root of the old Thracian name of the lower part of the Danube “Istrum”. By another theory, the city’s name comes from the Latin words “silo” and “stra”, meaning “awl” and “strategy”.

Geography

Silistra is in the northeastern part of Bulgaria on the southern bank of the Danube River. It is located in the Bulgarian part of Dobrudzha.

The municipality of Silistra covers an area of 516 km2[2] and includes the city and 18 villages. The area of the city-proper is 27.159 km2.[3]

Silistra is 431 km from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria; 141 km from Varna; and 119 km from Ruse.

History

Durostorum

The Romans built a fortress in AD 29 on the site of an earlier Thracian settlement and kept its name, Durostorum (or Dorostorum). The earliest saints of Bulgaria are Roman soldiers executed at Durostorum during the Diocletian Persecution (303–313), including St. Dasius and St. Julius the Veteran. Durostorum became an important military center of the Roman province of Moesia, and grew into a city at the time of Marcus Aurelius. Durostorum became the seat of a Christian bishopric and a center of Christianity in the region. Auxentius was expelled from Durostorum by an edict of Theodosius depriving Arian bishops in 383, and took refuge at Milan where he became embroiled in controversy with St Ambrose[4]. The Roman general Flavius Aëtius was born in the town in 396. When the Roman Empire split into the Eastern and Western empires, the town (known as Δουρόστολον, Durostolon[citation needed] in Byzantine Greek) became part of the Eastern (Byzantine) Empire. As part of the Bulgarian Empire Durostolon was known as Drastar in Medieval times.

The fort of Silistra

Silistra Historical Museum

Around the end of the 7th century, the town was incorporated into the First Bulgarian Empire and the bishop of Drastar (Дръстър in Bulgarian) was proclaimed the first patriarch of Bulgaria. In 895 (during the Bulgarian-Hungarian War of 894-896), the Hungarians, allies of the Byzantines, besieged the Bulgarian army under the personal command of Simeon I the Great in the fortress of the town but were repulsed.[5] The next year the Hungarians were decisively defeated in the battle of Southern Buh.

The town was captured by the forces of Sviatoslav I of Kiev in 969, but two years later it was taken by the Byzantines during the Battle of Dorostolon. It was renamed Theodoropolis, after military saint Theodore Stratelates, who is said to have come to the aid of Emperor John I Tzimiskes during the battle. In 976, Tsar Samuel restored Bulgarian rule in the region until 1001, when it once again became part of the Byzantine Empire.

In 1186, after the Rebellion of Asen and Peter, the town became part of the Second Bulgarian Empire and renamed Drastar.

In 1279, under Emperor Ivailo, Drastar was attacked by the Mongols; but after a three-month-long siege the Bulgarians managed to break through.[6] The town remained part of the Bulgarian Empire until the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans around 1400. Throughout the Middle Ages, Drastar (possibly known by the name Silistra too) was among Bulgaria’s largest and most important cities.

During Ottoman rule, Silistra (Ottoman Turkish: Silistre) was part of Rumelia Province and was the administrative centre of the Silistra district (sanjak). This district was later upgraded to become the Silistra Province and stretched over most of the western Black Sea littoral.

The town was captured and recaptured by Russian forces numerous times during several Russo-Turkish Wars and was besieged between 14 April and 23 June 1854 during the Crimean War. Namık Kemal wrote his most famous play, Vatan Yahut Silistre (“Homeland or Silistre”), a drama about the siege of Silistra, in which he expounded on the ideas of patriotism and liberalism. The play was first staged on 1 April 1873 and led to his exile to Famagusta.

The Ottoman Silistra Province was reduced in size, as the districts of Özi and Hocabey and the region of Bessarabia were ceded to the Russian Empire at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. Edirne Province was created from its southern regions in 1830. Finally, Silistra Province merged with the provinces of Vidin and Niš in 1864 to form Danube Province. Silistra was downgraded to a kaza centre in Ruse district in this province in the same year.

Between 1819 and 1826, Eliezer Papo — a renowned Jewish scholar — was the rabbi of the community of Silistra, making this town famous among observant Jews. Up to the present, his grave is a focus of pilgrimage, some pilgrims flying from Israel and even from Latin America to Bulgaria for that purpose.[7]

In 1878, following the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, Silistra was included in Bulgaria.

In May 1913, following the Second Balkan War and after unsuccessful Bulgarian-Romanian negotiations in London, the two countries accepted the mediation of the Great Powers, who awarded Silistra and the area in a 3 km radius around it to the Kingdom of Romania at the Saint Petersburg Conference. The 1913 Treaty of Bucharest ceded Silistra and the whole of Southern Dobruja to Romania. Silistra was renamed Dârstor by the Romanians. Bulgaria regained the town between 1916 and 1918 during World War I with the Treaty of Bucharest (1918), in which Romania surrendered to the Central Powers (including Bulgaria). The Treaty of Neuilly (1919) following World War I returned it to Romania. Silistra remained a part of Romania until the Axis-sponsored Treaty of Craiova in 1940, when the town once again became part of Bulgaria, a transfer confirmed by the Paris Peace Treaties in 1947. Between 1913 and 1938, Silistra was the capital of Durostor County, (except during Bulgarian rule). It became part of Ţinutul Mării between 1938-1940 during Romanian rule. Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, Silistra developed as a center of industry and agriculture in the region, comparable to Ruse (because of the strategic position on the Danube) and Dobrich (due to the abundant fertile lands). This led to a major population increase which continued until 1985. After that, the population slowly started to decrease. Following the collapse of the People’s Republic in 1989, many of its inhabitants migrated to other parts of the country or emigrated outside Bulgaria.
